Title: The ERA Model Continues to Demonstrate Its Strength with Record Sales in 2022
Organization: PASO Colombia
Date: Feburary 2023

During 2022, the Rural Alternative Schools achieved the highest sales in their 6 years of life, thanks to the commitment to peace of the peasant and reincorporated communities with which we work, as well as the effective collaborative work model that we have developed with them.

An Unprecedented Achievement

The Rural Alternative Schools (ERAs) began as laboratories for territorial collaboration, where ex-combatants and campesinos learned to work together on productive agricultural projects to support their families and eventually sell their surpluses. The first of these began its work in 2016 in the municipality of Miranda, in Northern Cauca.

What began as a series of experiments has gradually transformed into a network of profitable collective ventures. Between 2018 and 2020, the ERAs managed to sell more than $1.88 billion pesos; in 2021, they reached sales of $2.1 billion pesos; and in 2022, with a total of $4,570,234,596 pesos sold, the total accumulated sales in the previous four years were surpassed. In other words, it took four years for ERAs to sell their first million dollars, while today it only takes one year to do so (even when considering the fluctuation in the dollar price).

Products like coffee, cocoa, honey, fish, pork, and sacha inchi are among the most popular in sales. These production units have received continuous support along several links of the production chain, starting with training for cultivation, support for the construction of infrastructure, and adequate processing of the products; as will be seen below, they have also enjoyed special support in their marketing efforts...

Life Stories of
Women Who Left Coca Crops Behind

Project: Women Seeding Peace
Organization: PASO Colombia
Date: June 2020

In the middle of the Farallones de Cali National Park, a paradise had been waiting to be revealed. The armed conflict brought much hardship to Dagua, one of the municipalities that make up the park. For many families in the region, growing coca became the only way to bring food to the table and survive amidst war.

After the Peace Agreements, Dagua became a safer place where everyone could swim again in the crystal clear waters of its rivers without fear. Tourists soon began to arrive to discover this hidden paradise in the Anchicayá River basin. Preserving this area, while providing a legal livelihood to the locals who once grew coca, is the purpose of CORTUCAN, an ecotourism cooperative of La Cascada village strengthened by PASO Colombia’s Contingency Plan To Support Ex-coca Grower Families

From an early age, Emilse has worked the land. Unfortunately, forced displacement led her to leave her native Caquetá Department to seek a new life in the municipality of Dagua, Valle del Cauca Department.

Along this arduous path, and due to the difficulties of securing herself and her daughters a livelihood, she began to grow coca. When she heard of the PNIS (National Comprehensive Program for the Substitution of Illicit Crops), she filled her old car with all the neighbors who wanted to get involved and they attended the first meetings. Since then, Emilse has been working on alternatives to help her, her family, and her neighbors to have a better future.

Nancy paid a high cost trying to secure a livelihood for her family by growing coca. These experiences made her want to rebuild her life and the social fabric of her community. After the Peace Agreement was signed, she subscribed to the National Comprehensive Program for the Substitution of Illicit Crops (PNIS) and committed herself to the welfare of her municipality by participating in the Women and Gender area of the Development Programmes with Territorial Focus (PDET). But Nancy didn't stop there, she decided to seize every opportunity that peace offered to her.
